Hello, I am interested in some primitive "Folk Art" which was very prevalent during the 1970's.
Basically what you did was, get a rectangular piece of plywood and paint it matt black. Then you hammered nails into the plywood in a creative pattern. Finally, you wound some sparkly colured string round the nails in an original and thought provoking manner- reminiscent of spirals, etc.

Can anyone remember what these pictures were called- was it "nail pictures"..?

And does anyone still have such an item hanging on the wall in their home?

I have some of them! They all weren't with black back grounds. I have some with a burlap background and twine. Some are intricate and others are just circles or triangle shapes.

Punch Needle Pedal Pusher (Petal Pusher), Primitive Folk Art Fiber Craft

You will find a good example of a primitive folk art fiber craft in the Punch Needle Pedal Pusher (Petal Pusher) pattern. As far as rug hooking patterns go, it is just one of the many whimsical, adorable punch needle patterns created by Brenda Gervais from With Thy Needle and Thread Designers. The pattern shows a vintage scene of a bunny out for a spring ride and holding some flowers, possibly for his honey. This specific pattern includes weavers cloth with the design pre-printed on the cloth. The pattern is worked in Valdani 3 strand floss.

You can leave the finished project as a miniature rug to display on your wall, or you can fashion the embroidered piece into a pin keep using barn red wool for the back, then stuff with sawdust. Next, you can use a piece of the same wool fabric and attach it to the top of the pin keep with rusty-look safety pins to create a removable hanger. The pin keeps measures approximately 4 1/2" wide by 4 3/4" tall.  The pin keeps is a novel idea, or you may prefer to display it on the wall as a picture.  It's your choice.  Be creative.

Discover punch needle as a great hobby for all primitive rug hooking enthusiats. It is an ancient art that is being revived and is the latest needlearts craze.  You will find it as a great alternative or complement to cross stitch.
